Income tax return filing

A large share of the notices we deal with begin as an avoidable filing error: a TDS entry that does not match Form 26AS, interest income left out because no certificate arrived, the wrong ITR form for someone with capital gains, or a deduction claimed without proof on file.

We prepare returns for salaried employees, professionals, freelancers, traders, landlords, directors, partnership firms and companies. Each return is checked against the Annual Information Statement, Form 26AS and your own records before it is filed.

What filing with us covers

  • A document checklist based on your sources of income, so nothing is collected twice.
  • Reconciliation against the AIS, the TIS and Form 26AS, with any mismatch raised with you before filing.
  • Selection of the correct form from ITR-1 to ITR-7, including the schedules for capital gains, house property, foreign assets and presumptive income.
  • A computation under both the old and the new regime, so the return is filed under the one that costs less.
  • A check on advance tax and on interest under sections 234A, 234B and 234C before the return goes in.
  • Help after filing with e-verification, refund tracking and any intimation received under section 143(1).

FAQ

Common questions

When is the due date for filing an income tax return?

For most individuals and other non-audit cases the due date is 31 July following the end of the financial year. Audit cases generally run to 31 October. A belated return can be filed up to 31 December with a fee under section 234F, and an updated return under section 139(8A) is available for a further period. Filing late also costs the right to carry forward certain losses.

Can you file returns for years I have missed?

Often, yes. Depending on the year the route is a belated return, an updated return under section 139(8A), or an application for condonation of delay. We check what is still open for each year and tell you the tax effect before any work starts.

Should I choose the old regime or the new one?

It depends on the deductions you can actually support. We run the computation both ways on your figures. Taxpayers with a home loan, substantial claims under sections 80C and 80D, HRA and NPS contributions often do better under the old regime; those with few deductions usually do better under the new one.

Do I have to file if my income is below the exemption limit?

Not always, but filing is mandatory in several situations regardless of income. These include holding foreign assets or signing authority outside India, deposits above the prescribed limits, and a few others set out in the seventh proviso to section 139(1). It is also worth filing where TDS has been deducted and a refund is due, or where a loss is to be carried forward.

What happens if my return does not match Form 26AS?

The difference is usually picked up under section 143(1) and adjusted against your refund or raised as a demand. We reconcile before filing instead. Where the mismatch is the deductor's error, the TDS return at their end has to be revised.
